Differences and capabilities between the R1, R2 and R3 releases of Oracle Application Server 10g are all included.

Audience

The target audience for this course is Oracle application server administrators. Database administrators, information systems architects, and Java and web-based application developers interested in becoming familiar with the application server platform will also benefit from this course.

Prerequisites

It is assumed that the reader has some general experience using, developing or administering information systems technologies. Additionally, the following Sideris courses are suggested background prerequisites:
• The Sideris course Understanding Web Server Administration and Security
• The Sideris course XML Introduction
• The Sideris course Network+ Certification Support Skills

General familiarity with at least the concepts of the following technologies is also useful:
• HTML or XHTML
• The Java programming language and Java development.
• The operating system platform, such as Linux, Unix or MS Windows, on which the Oracle Application Server environment will operate.

Suggested Next Courses

The following courses are suggested at the completion of this course:

The certification track for an Oracle Application Server and web server administrator is depicted graphically next.

Objectives

Among the subjects covered are:
• The conceptual and theoretical basis for web and application servers and their role within modern enterprise-scale systems infrastructures. Included is an overview of key concepts such as a Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA).
• A detailed architectural discussion of the application server and its components, and how these interoperate to provide application and web services. Learn how the Application
• Server supports industry standards for Java, ESI, LDAP, SSL and many others.
• Capacity planning, initial installation and configuration of Application Server instances, including the Infrastructure and Middle Tier platforms.
• Startup, shutdown and other basic operations for the basic services and components of the Application Server.
• Become familiar with the most common Web-based, GUI-based and text-based administration tools available for the AS components. Using those tools, administer the services to meet the requirements of your environment.
• Configure the HTTP Server, including virtual host definitions.
• Configure and monitor the Web Cache and deploy a new, cached web site.
• Learn basic troubleshooting skills, using facilities found within the Application Server itself and incorporating operating system and network protocol utilities as needed.
• Perform at least minimal access to and exercise of the primary Middle Tier components such as Business Intelligence Reports and Discoverer, Portal, Wireless and others.
• Troubleshooting configuration problems using Application Server utilities and logs, and operating system and network facilities.
• Configure critical Infrastructure instance components used for identity management, such as Single Sign-on, Certificate Authority, Oracle Internet Directory and others.
• Use the Portal interface to perform Application Server administration and consider the architecture of the Portal environment in providing a user-interface to application services.
